Sentosa Island

Sentosa is a popular island resort in Singapore, visited by some five million people a year.Attractions include a 2 km (1.2 mi) long sheltered beach, Fort Siloso, two golf courses, two five-star hotels, and the Resorts World Sentosa, featuring the theme park Universal Studios Singapore.

Sentosa, not just another island at the southern tip of Singapore but one that hold its own. The island got its current name “Sentosa” from a naming contest organized by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board in 1972. It is a Malay word meaning “peace and tranquility”, so befitting . It has got several other names before being named “Sentosa”, like “Pulau Panjang” ( Long Island”) and “Blakang Mati”.

It has an original estimated area of 1.5 square mile, excluding the current reclaimed land. This island is rich in fauna and flora. You can often see peacocks roaming freely, and other mammals and reptiles foraging in the tropical forest.

Development of Sentosa into a tourist destination started in the 1970s. Access to the island via sea, sky and land were made possible with ferry between the then World Trade Centre of Singapore, and Singapore Cable Car from the scenic Mount Faber. Not forgetting the now discontinued Sentosa Monorail system. Today you can drive your car or even walk to the island.

Attractions and entertainments abound here in Sentosa the list goes, Merlion Statue, Underwater World and Dolphine Lagoon, Fort Siloso, Azzura Beach Club.

3 man-made beaches by land reclamation embraces the southern coastline of the island.  Siloso Beach on the west side. Palawan Beach lies in the middle and Tanjong Beach slightly toward the east.

Sentosa Cove, the South eastern part of Sentosa island,  got approval for redevelopment in 1986 by the Singapore Government.

It was a vision to create a waterfront living that eventually got three planners, Bernard Spoerry, McKerrel Lynch and Klages Carter Vail to conceptualise and finalise from 1992 to 1996.

First residential site on Sentosa island went on sale in 2003. And within 3 years, the first residential development  was completed. Named The Berth by the Cove, developed by Ho Bee Investment Ltd.

As Sentosa moves ahead of time, another Singapore history is unfolding.
